Live Report Of The Comrades Marathon 2017

It was a great day in South Africa

as many people were looking forward to seeing who wins the 2017 Comrades Marathon 'Up Run' that took place on 6 June 2017 from Durban to Pietermaritzburg. Radio Khwezi was there to report live from the scene and give the listeners all information on the race. The men’s title was won by Bongumusa Mthembu who was born and raised in Bulwer in the South of the KwaZulu-Natal province, he completed the 'up' run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg in 5:35:34.

He was followed by Hatiwande Nyamande from Zimbabwe (5:38.48) and Gift Kelehe, also from South Africa (5:41.48). Bongumusa Mthembu became the first Black South African to win the marathon in both sets ( Up and Down ) run. He won the down run race in 2014 then finished 3rd in 2016. He also took silver at the 100km World Championship in Spain last year where he beat Bruce Fordyce's long standing record by almost a minute. Although he set a strong pace throughout, Mthembu was unable to beat the 'up' run record of 5:24:49 which was set in 2008 by Russian, Leonid Shvetsov.

Camille Herron from the USA won the ladies title in a time of 6:27:35. She was followed by Alexandra Morozova from Russia in second with the time of 6:31:45 while SA’s Charne Bosman came third with the time of 6:39:51.
