Khwezi Staff Member Runs Comrades Marathon

"God was with me from the start to the finish line in Pietermatzburg."

Everything is permissible-but not everything is beneficial (1 Cor.6 vs12) - a lesson learnt in my debut Comrades Marathon race 2019: looking at the time I clocked 7hrs 58 minutes in an event celebrated and honoured by athletes across the globe I bow down and give praise and honour to God. It was my debut Comrades Marathon race that takes about 6 months and more to prepare but I defied odds and prepared for it in just a month. I still find it unbelievable as I raced I felt light as if I was an observer or spectator and God carried me on His wings till the finishing line! I never walked or took a breather but I ran till the finishing line.

I am grateful and would like to convey my gratitude to the following: former Station Manager of Radio Khwezi Mr. Beni Husslig and the staff for their support,  my coach Tani Terresa, and my club director Mr K Maphumulo and all the listeners of Radio Khwezi for their unwavering support and prayers that sailed me through to the finishing line!!

My wish for the next Comrades Marathon race is a silver medal and the above quoted verse and lessons learnt will be my guiding tools!!!!

Report by the Radio Khwezi Sports Team:

A number of records were broken in the 94th edition of the The Ultimate Human Race on Sunday, 09th of June.

Edward Mothibi stopped Bongmusa Mthembu from equaling Stephen Muzinghi's record of three successive titles of the race and Gerda Steyn finally got her crown after  finishing 2nd to Ann Ashworth last year.

The race became the two horse race with 22 kilometres to go, with the eventually winner Mothibi staying neck to neck with fiercely Bongmusa Mthembu. It was very difficult for everyone to predict the winner at the time between the two but Mothibi got the better of looked tired Mthembu with 7 kilometers to go.

On the other hand Gerda Steyn felt no competition as she finished 18th minutes ahead of Alexandra Morozova who finished 2nd and Steyn in a process broke a 13th year old  record set by Russia's Elena Nurgalieva (6:09:24) with a sensational time of 5:58:53

Mzikayise Ndlovu in his maiden Comrades Marathon managed to clock in 7:58:09 and Nkosikhona Mhlakwana impressively got 11th position in his first attempt as well.
